Finding a CrossFit gym is quite a personal decision and can be tricky, whether you’re a newbie interested in starting CrossFit, or looking to change CrossFit gyms. As well as the workouts and facilities – the people typically play a big role in our decision.

CrossFit Central recently had a chat with Uwe Kaufmann, Owner and Head Coach at CrossFit Dexterity in Thomastown, Melbourne.

 

crossfit gym near me, crossfit melbourneHow did you find out about CrossFit and when did you get started?

My then training partner told me about it, checked it out on Google and thought it looked interesting so I had a go at the workout “Fran”. That was about 8 1/2 years ago. Haven’t looked back since then.

What is your favourite thing about CrossFit vs. “traditional training”?

With CrossFit, I like the intensity and variety of the workouts. No day is ever the same and each and every day you work your whole body not just one body part at a time. Monday is never just Chest and Biceps day. Plus it taught me new things/skills and I am today at 53 stronger and fitter than ever. In contrast to traditional training, I was never strong and fit at the same time. I was either strong and big or fit and small – vicious cycle.

What does a sample training week look like for you?

I train Monday to Friday and rest Saturday and Sunday. Each day starts with a warm-up, then a Strength/Skill part where I practice usually 2 to 3 movements to get stronger and better at them (always changing) This is followed by the “Workout of the Day”. That’s where I put the foot down and I either try to get the work done as quickly as possible (for time) or do as many reps as possible in a given time (AMRAP). Challenging but fun is the word.

What advice would you give anyone wanting to get into CrossFit?

Just do it, give it a go for at least 6 weeks and see if it’s for you. You have nothing to lose. If you want to change, you have to change some things. You can’t keep doing what you always do, expecting a different outcome. Change requires Change.

What keeps your members coming back to CrossFit Dexterity for more?

The awesome and friendly community, the variety of workouts and I hope partly because of us coaches. It’s like a big family everyone knows and supports each other.
